چکیده

When a transformer is energized the phenomenon of magnetizing inrush current occurs and causes a pseudo tripping signal to the differential relay which leads to the problem of mal operation or false tripping of the relay. In order to avoid this false tripping of the differential relay and for safe operation of the transformer the distinction of inrush current with internal fault current is very important. Conventionally, second harmonic restraint relay is used but as size of power system network is increasing day by day the electrical network is becoming more and more complicated and some disadvantages of conventional system are slowly understood. Therefore, some other methods which can also be used for proper distinction between inrush current and internal fault current are highlighted in this paper. Different techniques used for

transformer differential protection using the fault-generated high-frequency transient components

Power transformers are the most important components of a power system, so their protection is a critical issue. This paper proposes a novel and efficient algorithm based on the high-frequency components of the differential current signal to discriminate between the magnetizing inrush currents and the internal faults. After detecting the over-current in the differential current signals, samples...

Discrimination of Inrush from Fault Currents in Power Transformers Based on Equivalent Instantaneous Inductance Technique Coupled with Finite Element Method

The phenomenon of magnetizing inrush is a transient condition, which occurs primarily when a transformer is energized. The magnitude of inrush current may be as high as ten times or more times of transformer rated current that causes malfunction of protection system. So, for safe running of a transformer, it is necessary to distinguish inrush current from fault currents. In this paper, an equiv...

Designing of a New Transformer Ground Differential Relay Based on Probabilistic Neural Network

Low- impedance transformer ground differential relay is a part of power transformer protection system that is employed for detecting the internal earth faults. This is a fast and sensitive relay, but during some external faults and inrush current conditions, may be exposed to maloperation due to current transformer (CT) saturation. In this paper, a new intelligent transformer ground differentia...
